On September 15-18, 2008, the 2008
Fourth International Conference on Intelligent Computing£¨ICIC2008, http://www.ic-ic.org/2008/index.htm£©was
successfully held in the Hope Hotel, Shanghai, China. This conference
was launched and hosted by the Institute of Intelligent Machines, Chinese
Academy of Sciences, and organized by Shanghai University, China, co-organized
by Center for International Scientific Exchanges Chinese Academy of Sciences,
and technically sponsored by the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society
and the International Neural Network Society, and financially supported
by funding from the National Science Foundation of China.
The opening ceremony for this conference was chaired
by the Steering Committee Chair, Prof. De-Shuang Huang, from the Institute
of Intelligent Machines, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The General Chair,
Prof. Donald Wunsch of Missouri University of Science and Technology,
USA, delivered a welcome message to all attendees at the opening ceremony.
Then the Program Committee Chair, Prof. Daniel S. Levine, of University
of Texas at Arlington, USA, overviewed the status of the paper submission
and review to all attendees at the opening ceremony. In addition, Vice
Dean of Hefei Institutes of Physical Science and Director of Hefei Institute
of Intelligent Machines, CAS, Prof. Tao Mei and Vice Dean of School of
Machine-Electronic Engineering and Automation, Prof. Min-Rui Fei, et.al,
attended the opening ceremony as well.
This conference invited six famous experts to deliver
the Plenary Speeches including Prof. Kazuyuki Aihara from The University
of Tokyo, Japan, Prof. Daniel Bullock from Boston University, USA, Prof.
Rolf Eckmiller from University of Bonn, Germany, Prof. Frank L Lewis from
University of Texas at Arlington, USA, Prof. Svetha Venkatesh from Curtin
University of Technology, Australia, and Prof. Paul J. Werbos, Inventor
of famous BP algorithm, from National Science Foundation, USA. After Plenary
Speeches session and Panel Discussion arranged on 16th, on 17-18th, the
attendees were engaged in wide academic exchanges and discussions in five
Oral Sessions and two Workshops as well as four hot topics Special Sessions,
respectively. In the afternoon of 18th, there was an Intelligent Computing
Technical Committee Meeting held, where ICIC2008 organization and planning
were reviewed. Particularly, how to organize the future ICIC academic
event was discussed in detail at the meeting.
This conference received totally 2336 submissions from
authors in 34 countries and regions. Based on rigorous peer reviews, 371
high-quality papers were selected for presentation at ICIC 2008, where
342 papers have been officially published by Springer as three sets of
books in Lecture Notes in Computer Sciences£¨LNCS£©, Lecture Notes in Artificial
Intelligence£¨LNAI£© and Communications in Computer and Information Science
(CCIS), and the remained 29 papers were recommended to the two SCI-indexed
international journals for publication as Special Issue such as Journal
of Circuits, Systems, and Computers,Journal of Universal Computer Science.
Over 300 experts from overseas and domestic were brought together to celebrate
this flourishing conference at the aim of promoting the academic exchange
of those subjects on Intelligent Technology as well as Bioinformatics,
Neuroinformatics, and Cheminformatics, etc. All the attendees have made
the in-deep exchanges and discussions within three days in Artificial
Intelligence, Machine Learning, Neurocomputing, Bioinformatics, Computational
Biology, Computational Intelligence, Swarm Intelligence, etc., and together
studied and overviewed the development and future of International Intelligent
Computing Technology.
This conference was filled with a new program of Best
Paper Award. Through two-days presentation and discussions in oral sessions,
four Best Paper Awards were sorted out by ICIC Technical Committee based
on the involved papers review results and the involved oral session chairs¡¯
evaluations. Particularly, these four Best Paper Awards were announced
