The 2008 Fourth International Conference on Intelligent Computing Was Successfully Held in Shanghai

   On September 15-18, 2008, the 2008 Fourth International Conference on Intelligent Computing£¨ICIC2008, http://www.ic-ic.org/2008/index.htm£©was successfully held in the Hope Hotel, Shanghai, China. This conference was launched and hosted by the Institute of Intelligent Machines, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and organized by Shanghai University, China, co-organized by Center for International Scientific Exchanges Chinese Academy of Sciences, and technically sponsored by the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society and the International Neural Network Society, and financially supported by funding from the National Science Foundation of China.
   The opening ceremony for this conference was chaired by the Steering Committee Chair, Prof. De-Shuang Huang, from the Institute of Intelligent Machines, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The General Chair, Prof. Donald Wunsch of Missouri University of Science and Technology, USA, delivered a welcome message to all attendees at the opening ceremony. Then the Program Committee Chair, Prof. Daniel S. Levine, of University of Texas at Arlington, USA, overviewed the status of the paper submission and review to all attendees at the opening ceremony. In addition, Vice Dean of Hefei Institutes of Physical Science and Director of Hefei Institute of Intelligent Machines, CAS, Prof. Tao Mei and Vice Dean of School of Machine-Electronic Engineering and Automation, Prof. Min-Rui Fei, et.al, attended the opening ceremony as well.
   This conference invited six famous experts to deliver the Plenary Speeches including Prof. Kazuyuki Aihara from The University of Tokyo, Japan, Prof. Daniel Bullock from Boston University, USA, Prof. Rolf Eckmiller from University of Bonn, Germany, Prof. Frank L Lewis from University of Texas at Arlington, USA, Prof. Svetha Venkatesh from Curtin University of Technology, Australia, and Prof. Paul J. Werbos, Inventor of famous BP algorithm, from National Science Foundation, USA. After Plenary Speeches session and Panel Discussion arranged on 16th, on 17-18th, the attendees were engaged in wide academic exchanges and discussions in five Oral Sessions and two Workshops as well as four hot topics Special Sessions, respectively. In the afternoon of 18th, there was an Intelligent Computing Technical Committee Meeting held, where ICIC2008 organization and planning were reviewed. Particularly, how to organize the future ICIC academic event was discussed in detail at the meeting.
   This conference received totally 2336 submissions from authors in 34 countries and regions. Based on rigorous peer reviews, 371 high-quality papers were selected for presentation at ICIC 2008, where 342 papers have been officially published by Springer as three sets of books in Lecture Notes in Computer Sciences£¨LNCS£©, Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence£¨LNAI£© and Communications in Computer and Information Science (CCIS), and the remained 29 papers were recommended to the two SCI-indexed international journals for publication as Special Issue such as Journal of Circuits, Systems, and Computers,Journal of Universal Computer Science. Over 300 experts from overseas and domestic were brought together to celebrate this flourishing conference at the aim of promoting the academic exchange of those subjects on Intelligent Technology as well as Bioinformatics, Neuroinformatics, and Cheminformatics, etc. All the attendees have made the in-deep exchanges and discussions within three days in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Neurocomputing, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computational Intelligence, Swarm Intelligence, etc., and together studied and overviewed the development and future of International Intelligent Computing Technology.
   This conference was filled with a new program of Best Paper Award. Through two-days presentation and discussions in oral sessions, four Best Paper Awards were sorted out by ICIC Technical Committee based on the involved papers review results and the involved oral session chairs¡¯ evaluations. Particularly, these four Best Paper Awards were announced and awarded to the involved authors at Banquet of 18th evening
   ICIC is an annual international conference event. ICIC2009 will be held on September 2009 in Ulsan, Korea.
